ジョニ・ミッチェルの『Shadows and Light』。
この作品の参加人員はジャズ好きからすると贅沢すぎる。
ドン・アライアス、パット・メセニー、ライル・メイズ、マイケル・ブレッカー、ジャコ・パストリアス、これを豪華と呼ばずになんと言おうか。
ジョニの書く曲は当然メロウで素晴らしいとして、ジャズ党の人間からすればバックの演奏に耳がいってしまう。
ガンガン攻めまくる全盛期のマイケル・ブレッカーの冴えっぷり。
下り坂に突入しつつあったジャコは時折和を乱しているように聴こえる瞬間はあるが、それでも新鮮味は失っていない。80年代に入ると徐々に精彩を失っていくジャコ、やはりこの時期はウェザーリポートに加わっていたのも大きいのではないか。81年頃になるとマンネリ感が否めなくなってくるが、それはワードオブマウスで二足の草鞋を履いていた為に、余裕がなかったのだろう。実際、この頃はライブで楽曲を披露する場面においても譜面を覚えきれていなかったという。ジャコの「没落」はウェザーリポートの脱退と示し合わせる様に始まっている。彼にとって、ザヴィヌルはまるで父のような存在だった。柔和でなんでも受け入れる母的なショーターに対して、強圧的な父像であるザヴィヌル。当然ジャコとザヴィヌルは激しくぶつかり合う瞬間もあったが、反面父の像に欠いていた(実父ジャックはプロのミュージシャンで常にロードに出ていた)ジャコの「理性」の部分を押さえつけていたのではないだろうか。
