屋敷に新たな客が到着した気配が漂っていた。空になったワイングラスを片手に、男は所在なげにホールを行ったり来たりしている。そこへ、小柄なお嬢様――次女が軽やかに近づき、控えめな挨拶を交わした。彼女の視線は、男の姿を越えて、屋敷の奥へと注がれていた。他の客たちはまだ姿を見せていないか、静かに状況を確かめているようだった。
