こすぷれは本来、好きなキャラクターの衣装を着て遊ぶところから始まったんだろう。
誰かに褒めてもらうためでも、評価を得るためでもなく、ただ「好きだからなりたい」という純粋な衝動が出発点だったはずだ。

初期の頃は、今とは違ってあまり褒められた文化ではなかった。
芸能界でも日の当たらない場所にいる人たちが、食えない中でやる芸の一つだ、そんな偏見すらあったと聞く。
「子供じみた遊び」「大人がやることじゃない」
そういう空気が確かに存在していた時代もあった。

だが、もう今はまったく違う。

現代のコスプレイヤーは、ただ衣装を着るだけの存在ではない。
彼ら彼女らは作品そのもの、原作者、アニメーションスタジオ、キャラクターデザインへの深い敬意を抱き、そのうえで自分自身の解釈と技術をのせて“表現”として衣装をまとう。
衣装を着るという行為が、作品愛と自己表現の交差点になっている。

その姿を見て、「自分もやってみたい」と思った世代が次々と生まれた。
そうやって文化は途切れずに受け継がれ、拡大し、深化し、いまや一つの社会現象に近いところまで来ている。

アニメが世界規模の産業へ成長した背景には、制作側だけでなく、
その魅力を“体現”し、広め、語り継いだコスプレイヤーという存在が確実に寄与している。

もはや、彼ら彼女らは単なる“Cosplayer”ではない。
衣装を通じてキャラクターと世界観を演じる存在、
つまり “Costume Performer（衣装表現者）” と呼んでいい。

Cosplay likely began as something simple: people putting on the costumes of characters they loved, just to have fun.
It wasn’t about praise, recognition, or performance. It started from a pure desire to inhabit a world that meant something to them.

In the early days, cosplay wasn’t respected the way it is now.
Some dismissed it as a minor craft for entertainers who couldn’t make a living—something existing at the edge of the performing arts.
Others labeled it childish or unserious, a hobby adults “shouldn’t” be doing.
That stigma genuinely existed.

But that world is long gone.

Today’s cosplayers are something entirely different.
They wear their costumes with deep respect for the original creators, the animation studios, and the character designers who shaped those fictional worlds.
When they step into costume, they are not merely dressing up—they are expressing themselves.
Their craft is intentional, thoughtful, and rooted in admiration.

And people saw that.
New generations watched them bring characters to life with passion and precision, and felt inspired.
That inspiration carried the culture forward, expanding it and elevating it into something far beyond its origins.

The global growth of anime didn’t happen because of the industry alone.
It was also powered by the fans who embodied these stories—cosplayers who physically carried these characters into the world and amplified their reach.

At this point, “Cosplayer” almost feels too small a word.
Many of them are performers in the fullest sense: interpreters of fictional identities, ambassadors of entire worlds.

Maybe it’s time to call them what they have truly become:
