Radar lock on is not a simple “technical mistake”.
When a warship or aircraft uses its fire control radar against another, it means one thing in military terms: I am now in a position to fire at you with one button.

For the crew being illuminated, this is an immediate threat. They have only seconds to decide how to protect themselves. Even if no shot is fired, the risk of miscalculation and escalation is enormous.

Japan has experienced this from both China and South Korea in recent years. As a Japanese citizen, I find it completely unacceptable. But precisely because of that, I believe the response must be calm and principled, not emotional.

Collect all data and records. Lodge a formal protest based on facts, not slogans. Push for clear rules and hotlines between militaries so that fire control radar is never used in peacetime encounters.

Radar lock on in peacetime should be treated as crossing a red line, no matter which country does it. Japan should say so clearly, not only for its own safety, but for the safety of every sailor and pilot operating over shared seas and skies. December 12, 2025
