現代のワニは「弱体化」していた！？

「ワニの頭はなぜ平たいのか？」
そんな疑問を持ったことはありますか？

現代のワニは、獲物に忍び寄るため、水の抵抗を減らす「平らな頭（Platyrostral）」をしています。

しかし、恐竜時代には陸上を闊歩し、ティラノサウルスのような「分厚い頭（Oreinirostral）」を持つワニの親戚（ノトスクス類）がたくさんいました。

この頭の形の違いが、噛む力にどう影響するか？

これを解明するため、ブリストル大学などの研究チームは、絶滅した陸生ワニと現代の半水生ワニの頭骨をCTスキャンし、デジタル上で噛む力をシミュレーションしました。

分析の結果、同じサイズで比較した場合、現代のワニのような「平らな頭」は、古代の「分厚い頭」に比べて、噛む際のストレスに弱く、筋肉の効率も悪いこと示唆されました。

かつての陸生ワニたち（バウルスクスやカイピラスクスなど）は、水中で頭を振る必要がなかったため、物理的な制約を受けず、噛むことに特化した「最強の骨格」を進化させていました。

では、なぜ現代のワニは「弱い」形状を選んだのでしょうか？

それは「水中生活への適応」というトレードオフの結果でした。

研究チームのJen Bright博士は、これを「強さと流線形の交換条件（スナッピー・ディール）」と表現しています。

現代のワニは、顎の構造的な強さを犠牲にしてでも、水中での隠密性と泳ぎやすさを手に入れました。そして、その弱点を補うために、強固な皮膚や、とにかく太く巨大な筋肉を発達させることで、今の「最強の捕食者」の地位を築いたのです。

進化は単に「力が強くなる」ことだけが正解ではありません。環境に合わせて何かを捨て、何かを得る。ワニの平らな頭は、そんな進化の戦略を物語っています。
