夜の客人4
屋敷に新たな客が到着した気配が漂っていた。空になったワイングラスを片手に、男は所在なげにホールを行ったり来たりしている。そこへ、小柄なお嬢様――次女が軽やかに近づき、控えめな挨拶を交わした。彼女の視線は、男の姿を越えて、屋敷の奥へと注がれていた。他の客たちはまだ姿を見せていないか、静かに状況を確かめているようだった。
「まだ到着していないようだね」
その言葉は、男の口から自然に漏れた。独りでうろついていた若い客は、お嬢様の存在に気づくと、慌てて体を正し、挨拶を返した。はにかむような笑みを浮かべ、空のグラスを軽く掲げて、まるで乾杯の真似事をする。グラスの底に残る微かな光が、部屋の薄暗い燭台の炎を映し、奇妙な緊張を帯びていた。
「お姉様はもうお客様を迎えに行ったのかしら？」
お嬢様の声は穏やかだったが、そこには微かな問いかけの影が潜んでいる。彼女は腕を組み、屋敷の中央にぽつんと佇んだ。周囲の空気は静かに淀み、遠くから聞こえる足音や、窓辺に張り巡らされた蜘蛛の巣のような影が、夜の訪れを予感させていた。何かが、この屋敷でゆっくりと動き始めている――そんな予感が、彼女の心に忍び寄っていた。

The atmosphere suggested that another guest had arrived at the mansion. Holding an empty wine glass, the man wandered aimlessly around the hall. Approaching him lightly, the petite young lady—the second daughter—exchanged a modest greeting. Her gaze extended beyond him, scanning the depths of the mansion to check if the other guests had yet arrived.
"It seems they haven't arrived yet."
The words slipped naturally from the man's lips. The young guest, who had been wandering alone, noticed the young lady and quickly straightened up, returning the greeting. With a shy smile, he raised his empty glass lightly, as if mimicking a toast. The faint light lingering at the bottom of the glass reflected the dim flames of the candelabras, carrying a peculiar tension.
"Has my elder sister already gone to welcome the guests?"
The young lady's voice was calm, but it held a subtle shadow of inquiry. She crossed her arms and stood alone in the center of the mansion. The surrounding air stagnated quietly, and the distant footsteps, along with the spiderweb-like shadows stretched across the windows, foreshadowed the arrival of the night. Something was slowly beginning to stir in this mansion—a premonition that crept into her heart.
