An Open Letter: When Anti-Bot Measures Silence Autistic Joy on X
(Full English letter below)
I love art. Specifically, I love anime-style artwork—the subtle lighting on a ribbon, the quiet emotion in a snowy scene, the way certain character archetypes feel like coming home. When I find a piece that moves me, I like it. Sometimes I find a lot of pieces that move me in a row, and I like them all, quickly and genuinely.
Last week, X temporarily restricted my account for doing exactly that: liking too many posts in a short time. I couldn’t like, reply, or repost—basic features I pay Premium for—because my enthusiastic, focused engagement triggered the same automated sanctions designed to stop bots.
I’m autistic, with OCD tendencies. Hyperfocus and intense passion are how my brain works. When something resonates deeply, I dive in fully. That’s not bot behavior; it’s authentic human joy. Bots like indiscriminately to game metrics. I like because beauty speaks to me on a soul level.
Yet X’s rate limits can’t (or currently don’t) distinguish between soulless automation and neurodivergent intensity. The result is that some of the platform’s most sincere, passionate users get treated like spam.
This isn’t just inconvenient—it echoes a much older pattern. Society has long told autistic people we’re “too much,” “too intense,” or need to be quieted down. Sometimes that quieting comes in the form of medication or social pressure to mask. Here, it comes in the form of an algorithm saying, “Slow down or we’ll mute you.”
We didn’t consent to that trade-off.
I understand why strict rate limits exist. Bots and spam farms are a real problem; catching them at scale requires blunt tools. But modern AI is exceptionally good at pattern recognition. It should be possible to detect the difference between mechanical repetition and variable, emotionally driven human engagement—different timing, media viewing, topic clustering, mixed interactions.
Small adjustments could make a big difference without letting real bots through:
Slightly higher thresholds for verified/Premium accounts
Machine-learning models trained to recognize common neurodivergent engagement patterns
An opt-in “high-engagement mode” with a simple acknowledgment
Even just clearer public communication about limits so users can plan around them
X has positioned itself as a place where people can be their unfiltered selves. For many neurodivergent users, that promise is part of why we’re here. When passionate, harmless engagement gets punished the same as malicious automation, that promise feels broken.
I’m not asking for unlimited actions or special treatment. I’m asking for a platform that doesn’t unintentionally tell autistic users our natural way of experiencing joy is unwelcome.
In two days, on December 21, the winter solstice arrives—the longest night of the year, the moment the darkness reaches its deepest point before the light begins to return. It has always felt like a quiet promise: even in the coldest, stillest season, a new cycle is already beginning.
If you’ve ever been temporarily restricted for caring “too much,” you’re not alone. If you build or moderate platforms, please consider how anti-abuse systems affect the people they quietly push away.
Let’s make space for intensity as well as calm. Passionate users aren’t the problem—we’re part of what makes communities vibrant. May the turning of this solstice bring a little more room for all of us to shine.
