アメリカのPortrait Society of AmericaでSignature Statusの称号を獲得しました。

米国在住の画家で会員の早川さんにお聞きしたところ

Signature Statusはいわゆる名誉称号で、作品が技術的に卓越していることはもちろんのこと、国内外でのコンペティションで大きな賞を受賞したり、芸術教育に貢献があったりした会員に授与されるもの。

との事です。

今年初出品で【Certificate of Excellence Award】賞を受賞したばかりなので大変嬉しく思います。

他のSignature Status獲得者は今年のPortrait Society of Americaの大賞受賞でした。

アメリカで倭国人の世界的な活動の功績が認められた事は大変栄誉なことであります。

私たち真核生物は、いつ、どのようにして生まれたのか？複雑化とミトコンドリアの「鶏と卵」論争に新たな証拠🐓🥚

私達人類を含めた真核生物は、古細菌の細胞内に真正細菌が共生しミトコンドリアとなることで、効率的なエネルギー生産が可能となりました。
また真核生物では核や細胞骨格などの複雑な特徴を獲得することで多細胞化し、今日の生物個体が繁栄しています。

しかし真核生物の起源については未だ明らかになっておらず、祖先となる古細菌からどのようなプロセスを経て、今日の真核細胞になったのかは不明な部分が多いです。

今回発表された研究は核、細胞骨格、ミトコンドリアを持つ真核生物の共通祖先(LECA)以前に、それらの構造をどのような順番で獲得していったのかを推定した研究です。

特に真核生物内のミトコンドリアがいつ定着したのかについては、
ミトコンドリア先行説: ミトコンドリアを先に獲得してエネルギー源となり、真核生物となった
ミトコンドリア後行説: 古細菌が複雑化してミトコンドリアと共生できるようになった
という2つの説があり、決着がついていません。

まず真核生物、真正細菌、古細菌の62のマーカー遺伝子を用いて系統樹を作成し、重要な分岐年代を推定しました。
その結果、真核生物の共通祖先(LECA)が18.0億〜16.7億年前であるのに対し、それらを生み出した祖先系統はさらに古いことが判明しました。
・宿主(古細菌側)の共通祖先(nFECA): 30.5億〜27.9億年前
・ミトコンドリアの共通祖先(mFECA): 23.7億〜21.3億年前

注目すべきは、宿主系統(nFECA)とミトコンドリア系統(mFECA)の分岐に、6~8億年ものギャップが存在することです。

このギャップの間、何が起きていたのでしょうか。
まずミトコンドリアの共生時期についてです。
真正細菌由来の遺伝子がいつ重複を開始したかを解析したところ、約22億年前付近から急増していることが分かりました(TIM14, TIM44など)。
つまり、この頃に共生が本格化したと考えられます。

そして重要なのは、それより前の出来事です。
真核生物の細胞骨格を形成するチューブリンは28億〜22億年前、
アクチンは29.0億〜24.7億年前に、重複が確認されました。

またそれ以外の真核生物に必要な以下の遺伝子の重複がみられ、ミトコンドリアと共生する約22億年前に発達していたことが示唆されます
(小胞体やゴルジ体といった細胞膜間の輸送に関わる遺伝子、エンドソームやリソソーム、脂質合成遺伝子、スプライシング、核局在化関連遺伝子)。

以上の結果から、古細菌は核(やその前駆体となる核様の構造)や細胞骨格によって細胞が複雑化し、その後にミトコンドリアが共生したことを示唆し、
逆に「ミトコンドリアがあることで複雑化が始まる」という説とは整合しない結果となりました。
つまりミトコンドリアのエネルギーがないと細胞は複雑化できないわけではなく、複雑化の初期段階ではミトコンドリアは必須でないことを示しています。

今回の研究では、真核生物の形成プロセスが30億年から22.5億年前の中始生代から古原生代後期に及ぶことを示しました。
ミトコンドリア獲得の時期は、酸素が増加した大酸化イベントの直後ですが、当時の海洋は無酸素状態であったと言われており、嫌気的な環境で共生が行われていたと考えられます。
その過程で、古細菌が複雑化を伴う進化をし、その後に細菌を取り込むことで今の真核細胞の形になっていったというシナリオが示されました。
