I’ve been reading discussions about 4K textures and their impact on visual detail, and there are quite a few misconceptions about how textures actually work.

One of the most common misunderstandings is the idea that a larger download size automatically indicates poor optimisation. In reality, this is usually not the case. Higher-resolution textures or better compression methods often increase download size, but they can also improve colour accuracy and image fidelity. Optimisation is far more nuanced than file size alone.

It’s true that 4K textures allow for more potential detail, but it’s not true that they must be used for intricate detail. What actually matters is the texel density of the UV islands. Essentially their DPI in relation to the screen. A well-unwrapped 2K texture can have the same effective texel density as a 4K texture if the UV islands are scaled and laid out intelligently. This is a heavily oversimplified explanation on achieving a specific result and would best be explained in a classroom environment.

In fact, in game development it’s common for decals to have their own dedicated UV space to maximise texel density and ensure clean, sharp details where they matter most.
While most end users don’t need to know the technical specifics, it is useful for them to understand the differences between download size, VRAM usage, compression formats, filtering methods, and how each one affects both image quality and performance.

For example, download size is cheap and storage and bandwidth are plentiful. VRAM, however, is limited and shared with every other avatar, prop, and effect in a scene. That makes VRAM far more critical to performance than the size of the files you download. Placing download size as the main determining factor that affects frames per second and frame timing is a little silly. November 11, 2025
