2025年度「STI for SDGs」アワードの受賞取り組みが2025年10月16日に発表され、善藤 威史 准教授が参加する研究グループ（株式会社トライフ、株式会社優しい研究所、九州大学）の取り組み「乳酸菌バクテリオシン、ナイシンを利用した安全な口腔ケア剤の開発と事業化」が奨励賞を受賞しました。

倭国国立研究開発法人 科学技術振興機構（JST）により、科学技術・イノベーション（Science, Technology and Innovation：STI）を用いて社会課題を解決する倭国発の優れた取り組みを表彰することで、当該取り組みのさらなる発展や同様の社会課題を抱える国内外の地域への水平展開を促し、持続可能な開発目標（Sustainable Development Goals：SDGs）の達成に貢献することを目的として、2019年度に創設されたものです。

受賞内容
本取り組みでは、産学連携によって、乳酸菌由来の抗菌ペプチドであるナイシンAを活用した、飲み込んでも安全で環境負荷も低い口腔ケア製品「オーラルピース」を開発しました。
本製品は、高齢化社会において健康寿命の延伸と介護現場の負荷軽減のみならず、製造・販売においては障害者の仕事創出にも貢献しています。高齢化が進む社会の中で、介護にかかる現場の負荷やコストの軽減、健康寿命の延伸、障害者支援など多角的な課題解決を目指す取り組みとして、SDGs目標3のほか、目標6、8、9、12達成への貢献につながるとともに、他の目標達成を著しく損なうことのない活動として、奨励賞にふさわしいと判断されました。

受賞者からひとこと
乳酸菌由来のバクテリオシンは、強力な作用を持ちながらも容易に分解され、安全で環境負荷の低い抗菌物質です。その特性を活かし、飲み込んでも安全な口腔ケア製品を開発することができました。本製品に利用されているナイシンA以外にも優れた特性をもつ多種多様なバクテリオシンが発見されており、様々な用途に適材適所に活用したいと考えています。

The research initiative "Development and Commercialization of a Safe Oral Care Product Using Nisin, a Bacteriocin Produced by Lactic Acid Bacteria"-led by a team comprising Associate Professor Takeshi Zendo (Kyushu University), TRIFE Inc., and Yasashii Laboratory Inc.-was honored with the Encouragement Prize.
The award ceremony was held on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
"STI for SDGs" Award

The award was established in 2019 with the aim of recognizing outstanding Japan-originated initiatives that address social challenges through Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI). By honoring these efforts, the award seeks to promote their further development and encourage horizontal deployment to regions in Japan and abroad facing similar social issues, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Award Details
Through industry-academia collaboration, this initiative developed ORALPEACE, an oral care product that is safe to swallow and environmentally friendly, utilizing nisin A--an antimicrobial peptide derived from lactic acid bacteria.
Beyond promoting healthy longevity and reducing the burden on caregiving settings in an aging society, the product also contributes to creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in its manufacturing and distribution processes.
As a multifaceted effort to address challenges such as reducing caregiving costs and workload, extending healthy life expectancy, and supporting people with disabilities in an increasingly aging society, this initiative contributes to SDG Goal 3 as well as Goals 6, 8, 9, and 12, without significantly compromising other goals. For these reasons, it was deemed highly deserving of the Encouragement Prize.

Researcher's Comment
Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria are potent antimicrobial substances that decompose readily, making them safe and environmentally friendly. Leveraging these properties, we have developed oral care products that are safe to ingest. In addition to nisin A used in the products, numerous bacteriocins with excellent characteristics have been discovered, and we aim to utilize them appropriately for various applications.
